Sokoban Helper

The eight vanilla Sokoban levels, in the order you meet them climbing up from the Oracle. One variant of each floor is chosen per game, so you will see four of these eight. Maps, boulder and trap counts, notes and a walkthrough video for each.

Rules That Apply Everywhere

Read first
  • No diagonal squeezes. Sokoban blocks moving diagonally between two boulders, and blocks squeezing past a boulder into a diagonal gap. Plan every push assuming orthogonal movement only.
  • Breaking the rules costs Luck. Destroying a boulder inside Sokoban (force bolt, striking, applying a pick-axe) is −1 Luck each time. Digging down and teleporting are disabled outright on these levels, so there is no shortcut past a mistake.
  • Every floor ships spare boulders. Counts are listed on each card. Spares are your error budget; the two scrolls of earth on floor 1 are the sanctioned way to replace a boulder you have genuinely lost. Verify their beatitude first.
  • Bring a boulder-breaking backup anyway. An aklys, pick-axe or wand of striking gets you past a boulder that is truly stuck. Take the Luck hit rather than abandoning the branch — but treat it as the last resort.
  • Floor 1 has pits, floors 2–4 have holes. A pit costs you a turn or two; a hole drops you to the level below and you climb back up. Floor 4 is the top — it has no up staircase.
  • The prize is on floor 4, inside a treasure zoo behind one of three doors. The Sokoban prize — a bag of holding or an amulet of reflection — sits on a burnt Elbereth and a cursed scroll of scare monster. Do not pick up that scroll until you have milked the square for what you need.

Original orientation
NetHack 3.7 and 5.0 may mirror each Sokoban level horizontally, vertically, or both when the level is created, so the map you walk into can be a reflection of the canonical one. Toggle these to match what is on your screen. NetHack 3.6 never flips — leave both off if you are playing 3.6.

Rolling-boulder traps are drawn as plain floor, not ^ — they stay hidden on a premapped level.
